I’ve got two boys that I’m raising and so far they have picked up none of my bad habits. Now that I’m a family man, I left the rock band thing that I did when I was younger. I spent age 17 to 35 or so moonlighting as lead vocalist with a little keyboard playing to help fill out the sound with different bands over those years, Ranging from high school garage bands to serious regional bands that toured a little and to local bands that got it’s ya-ya’s out in small clubs around the area. I was never close to the big time and never expected to get close; I just had a good time doing it. I realized I had to quit because my kids were young and demanding and it was too hard to function as a parent on Sunday morning when you got back from Warroad at . God, do I miss the band thing, but my life with my kids is beyond words and I have no regrets, just a little longing that would probably go away a couple of weeks later if I got back into it again.
My life is Family, Work and Youth Sports right now and it’s been blur.
The Yankees scored 7 runs in the final two innings to blow past the Twins 10-4 last night.
The Twins bullpen has been very good this year but not last night and Momma said there would be nights like this.
How good as the bullpen been this year? They rank 6th in both leagues with a 3.13 ERA. In comparison... The starting staff ranks 30th out of 30 teams with a 5.22 ERA and when your starting staff is last in baseball... that means that your bullpen is going to be used because they have to take over for ineffective starters... and when your bullpen is used... two things can happen... Eventually they will run into a night like last night because if you keep picking up bombs eventually one will go off... and... the bullpen can become a little overused and wear down a little.
I'm not saying that the bullpen is wearing down but it's possible. So... Baseball success for our Twins squad is once again going to come down to our starting pitchers getting better and eating more innings and this was the primary problem last year and it's a problem this year as well.
I know it's odd that I would bring up the starting pitching, the morning after, when starter Scott Diamond was OK and the bullpen failed but it's the way it works.
As the roster continues to turn over in the coming days, months and years. Starting pitching will be the key. It will be great to watch the younger minor league players arrive. Byron Buxton, Miguel Sano, Oswaldo Arcia joining Joe Mauer, Aaron Hicks, Trevor Plouffe and Chris Parmelee could create a powerful offense... But... The future of the Twins will depend on young pitchers... Kyle Gibson, Alex Meyer, Trevor May and even Sam Deduno becoming the core of a talented starting staff. When the starting pitching becomes a force... The Twins will become a force. It goes hand in hand.
Sam Deduno pitches tonight.... Hopefully he can go long enough to give the bullpen a break.
